Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed Congress leaders to ensure that no eligible voter is removed from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Speaking at a party meeting, he emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to protect voter rights.
Siddaramaiah's directive on voter rolls
Siddaramaiah stated that the SIR exercise should not be used to disenfranchise legitimate voters. He urged party workers to monitor the revision closely and report any irregularities. The former CM also called for transparency in the process, warning that any attempt to delete eligible names would be met with strong opposition.
MLC J C Chandrashekar's support
MLC J C Chandrashekar backed Siddaramaiah's stance, asserting that the state government must function under his guidance. He criticized the ruling BJP for allegedly targeting Congress supporters through voter list manipulation. Chandrashekar added that the Congress party would hold protests if voter rights were violated.
The SIR is a periodic exercise to update electoral rolls, but opposition parties have often accused the government of using it to remove voters from specific communities. Siddaramaiah's remarks come ahead of upcoming local body elections in Karnataka.
