Bihar Cabinet Approves Construction of Major International Airport in Sonepur
In a significant development for Bihar's infrastructure, the state cabinet has given its approval for the construction of a greenfield international airport in Sonepur, located in the Saran district. This decision has been hailed as a historic milestone by BJP MP from Saran and former Union minister, Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Speaking at a press conference held at the BJP state office in Patna on Saturday, Rajiv Pratap Rudy expressed his elation over the cabinet's decision. He described it as the fulfilment of a cherished goal he had set in his political career. Rudy emphasized that this achievement is not limited to just Chhapra or Patna but represents a major milestone for the entire state of Bihar, impacting all its residents.
Project Details and Timeline
The proposed international airport is targeted for completion within the next five years. According to Rudy, this facility is poised to rank among the largest greenfield international airports in South Asia. It is designed to become a central aviation hub for India, significantly enhancing air connectivity and infrastructure in the region.
Strategic Location and Connectivity
Situated just 15 kilometers from Patna, the airport will offer direct connectivity to key international destinations including Europe, America, and Australia. Rudy highlighted that the facility will function as a major gateway for air traffic from north-east India, Bhutan, Nepal, West Bengal, and Bihar itself. The project will be integrated with multiple road networks, many of which are currently under construction or in the planning stages, ensuring seamless access.
Farmer-Friendly Land Compensation
In a notable move, Rudy commended the Nitish Kumar-led government for adopting a farmer-friendly approach in the project. The land compensation has been fixed at five times the prevailing real estate rates, ensuring that affected individuals receive fair value for their land. This measure aims to address concerns and support the local community impacted by the development.

The MP extended special thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his support in this endeavour. He outlined that the airport will significantly boost aviation training opportunities in Patna and across Bihar. Furthermore, it is expected to catalyze economic transformation, generate substantial employment, and drive overall prosperity for the state's 14 crore residents. Rudy expressed confidence that this infrastructure project will place Bihar firmly on the national and international map, attracting investment and tourism.
