Satara Forest Vigilance Team Confiscates Illegal Timber Worth Over Rs5.27 Lakh in Coordinated Raids
In a significant crackdown on illicit timber trade, the Vigilance Team of the Satara Forest Department has successfully seized illegally transported teak and raiwal wood valued at Rs5,27,872 during a series of meticulously coordinated raids across four locations within the district on Thursday. The operation, which spanned multiple villages, represents a major enforcement action against forest resource violations in the region.
Secret Intelligence Triggers Multi-Location Operations
Acting upon confidential information received on Wednesday regarding substantial quantities of timber being unlawfully transported and stored without valid licences or permits, forest officials launched targeted operations in Umbraj village within Karad taluka and adjacent areas. The intelligence suggested systematic illegal activities involving valuable forest products, prompting immediate departmental response.
Joint Enforcement Teams Execute Simultaneous Raids
The raids were conducted through a collaborative effort between the Range Forest Officer (Protection and Anti-Encroachment) of Satara along with his dedicated staff, and the Range Forest Officer, Karad (Territorial), supported by their respective teams. This joint approach ensured comprehensive coverage and effective execution across the targeted locations.
Extensive Seizures Across Five Villages
The enforcement operations were carried out across five villages: Umbraj, Kalantrewadi, Mauje, Korti, and Shivde. According to Range Forest Officer Ganesh Mahangade, the teams made substantial confiscations during these sudden inspections. A total of 1,283 wooden logs comprising teakwood and raiwal species were seized from four separate locations, with the timber volume measuring 98.449 cubic metres.
In addition to the valuable timber, officials also confiscated 61.275 cubic metres of firewood from Kalantrewadi and Shivde villages, indicating broader unauthorized collection of forest resources. The combined seizure represents a significant blow to illegal timber operations in the Satara district.
Comprehensive Anti-Encroachment Strategy
The operation demonstrates the forest department's strengthened vigilance against timber smuggling and unauthorized forest resource extraction. By targeting multiple storage and transportation points simultaneously, authorities prevented potential dispersal of evidence and secured the illegal consignment effectively. The seized materials have been transported to secure departmental facilities for further investigation and legal proceedings.
This enforcement action underscores the ongoing commitment of the Satara Forest Department to protect valuable forest resources and curb illegal activities that threaten ecological balance and revenue streams. Further investigations are underway to identify all parties involved in the illicit timber trade network.
